Look for the DIN
Products sold in Canada with disinfectant claims carry a Drug Identification Number issued by Health Canada. It appears on the label. A cleaner making disinfectant claims without a DIN has not been assessed for those claims, whatever the marketing says.
Contact Time Is Not Optional
Every disinfectant label states a contact time — the period the surface must stay visibly wet for the product to work. It is often several minutes, and it is longer than a spray-and-wipe takes. A surface wiped dry immediately has been cleaned, not disinfected. On fast-drying surfaces this can mean reapplying, which is worth knowing before staff are told to move faster.
Clean Before You Disinfect
Organic soil deactivates most disinfectant chemistries. Applying disinfectant over visible dirt wastes product and leaves the surface no safer. Two-step cleaning takes longer but is the only way the second step does anything. Some one-step cleaner-disinfectants are validated for light soil — check the label rather than assuming.
