Red, Blue or Black — Choosing the Right Grade

Pad colour signals how aggressive the pad is. A red buffing pad is the light-duty option: it cleans and restores gloss on floors that are already sealed and finished, which makes it the right choice for routine maintenance. Move up to a blue pad when you need to scrub heavier soil, and use a black pad only for stripping finish ahead of a recoat. Running too aggressive a pad on a maintenance schedule strips gloss you have already paid to build, and forces an earlier recoat than your budget planned for.

Buffing Versus Burnishing

The two words get used interchangeably on job sites, but they are different operations. Buffing runs at low speed, works a spray solution into the finish and repairs light wear. Burnishing runs at high speed, typically above 1,000 RPM, and melts the finish smooth to produce a wet look. A red pad is a buffing pad, not a burnishing pad. Fitting one to a high-speed burnisher will glaze the pad, shorten its life and can scorch the floor finish.

Machine Compatibility

A 12 inch red buffing pad fits 12 inch low-speed rotary floor machines and automatic scrubbers with a standard centre hole. 3M rates the 5100 for 175 to 600 RPM. Run it dry for buffing, with a spray buff solution for gloss restoration, or with clean water for light damp cleaning.
